Scotland's crunch Euro 2024 game with Hungary has been delayed after an injury Hungary's Barnabas Varga which has left some players in tears Scotland's Euro 2024 game against Hungary was delayed after a horror injury to Barnabas Varga on Sunday (June 23) evening. Varga was involved in a collision with Scotland's keeper Angus Gunn. The Incident happened in the 69th minute, when Hungary were on the offensive after winning a free-kick, with the resulting ball launched into the box. Gunn had come racing off his line and collided with his own player, Anthony Ralston, and Varga - who appeared to land awkwardly. Play was stopped as Hungarian players were quick to call on the medical staff when the injury became apparent to those around Varga.
The 29-year-old was attended to by medical staff who had rushed onto the pitch immediately after the collision. Shields were then propped up around the forward, as he was given privacy while receiving medial attention. The episode left Liverpool ace and Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai in tears - and TV cameras cut away from the scenes on the pitch, to give all those involved some privacy.
The emotional Liverpool star was then left fuming as medical personnel walked onto the pitch with the stretcher. Two Hungarian players pushed away stewards and ran over to their stricken team-mate with the stretcher. Varga was taken away on a stretcher as the whole of the stadium applauded him in Stuttgart. The Hungarian FA shared on X: "Barnabás Varga's condition is stable! The player of @Fradi_HU [Ferencvaros] is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart! We will inform you immediately if there is any news about its status!
There was a potential penalty check for the incident as the Hungarian received treatment at MHPArena. However, after the check, the on pitch decision was upheld. The game resumed after a lengthy stoppage - and 10 minutes was added onto the end of the game. Hungary and Scotland both needed all three points to advance to the next round. The Hungarians went into the final clash at the foot of Group A, while Scotland were one point ahead after their draw with Switzerland on Wednesday (June 18) evening. Hungary netted a 99th minute winner, through Kevin Csoboth, with almost the last kick of the game. Scotland have now been eliminated from Euro 2024, Hungary will have to wait to see if they're one of the third placed teams to go through. READ NEXT:
